Media representations in soap operas

This is a news article about Millwall and West Ham fans fighting. This article reinforces the stereotype of people from east London being violent and aggressive as Millwall fans are from the east end.
The other character,Dexter, is challenging the stereotype of black people being thugs. He's challenging this because he's trying to make amends with Phil and it trying to make a living because he just wants a job. He's being represented as being kind and thoughtful as he's getting a gift for Phil to try and make amends. This is a fair representation because he's not being shown as a thug or a criminal. This challenges the stereotype of black people being criminals because he's shown as caring.
The film Tsotsi shows the typical stereotypes for black people. They are in gangs are involved in crime. This is how many black people are represented. Dexter from the eastenders clip challenges this as he's trying to be a better person.
Not a bad first go at analysing representations Stephen although at times it's a little brief and lacking in detail.
ReplyDeleteWWW- you have written some good references to other media products and shown that the stereotypes you have analysed are found elsewhere.
EBI- I would like a little more of an explanation about how and why Soap operas use stereotypes and how they fill in the gaps for audiences.
Show me- reply to this post and explain in more detail why TV shows, and soaps in particular use stereotypes.
TV shows use stereotypes because they don't have time to develop the character so they use stereotypes so people can easily understand and see what type of character they are going to be. This is because there are lots of characters in TV shows so it would take too long to give them all backstories and character traits so they use stereotypes to help with this.
